On the knitting front, I'm still finishing off socks for the CFA volunteers. Nearly 4 pair done. My goal is to send 5 to Victoria so I'm very close.

I took the lovely 'I'm on school holidays can't I just relax?' children out for lunch yesterday. Wasn't hard for the waitress to pick which meal was mine. (The one without fries) Had a great time but, more importantly, made a discovery.

Now being on the Gold Coast means I'm probably about 3 months behind the rest of the country in finding this little gem. However, I will plough on. The magazine is called The Knitter and I purchased the first issue.

Featured designers include Louisa Harding, Teva Durham and Belinda Boaden. There are 15 patterns covering jumpers, cardigans, tops and a coat for adults, a cute little Argyle child's jumper, and 2 bags plus 3 cushions.

I think I will be adding quite a few of these little numbers to my Rav queue.

A friend of mine, let's call her Miss D, has recently been diagnosed with having a foreign body residing in one of her sinuses. Miss J thought it was a alien tracking device, implanted so when they were ready, she could be recalled to the mothership.

I have a different opinion. It is her unborn twin. I know this because not only have I done a Senior First Aid course, I also have the Girl Guide First Aid Badge. Virtually a Doctor. Really.

Anyway, I wasn't prepared for this baby (a boy) to arrive without a gift.

Can't Bear a Square

I really don't like joining squares and I don't know why. I'm always pleased with the result and I love the finished object, so why the reluctance?

Recently I have ironed, vacuumed, pulled weeds and done anything in preference to running a small amount of yarn between two squares.

At least I now understand from where my children's procrastination originates.

The World in Alphabetical Order

I try to live an ordered life. Doesn't always happen that way. I once read a quote that not many of us live the life we thought we would. Very true.

But does my life have to be in alphabetical order? My computer recently died. Actually, I have killed off a number of them. Apparently I have sexy fingers (everything I touch gets ....). Mr Fitknit being his helpful self arranged for a new computer for me to destroy/use. I wasn't home when the data was transferred from the dead to the living and was surprised to find my life had a whole new order. My favourites list is now in alpha order. All of it. Every single linky.

Then I shouldn't really be surprised. The person who did it has their dvd collection in the same order. Yes, I do occasionally move the dvds around when I visit! Wouldn't you?

Balance

What is it and how do I get some? I'm talking about trying to balance charity and non-charity knitting. There are so many projects I would love to make for myself but I keep pushing them to the back of the queue. It isn't that I think I'm not worth it or any other self-confidence issues, I just feel the need to make for, well, those in need.

So, what's a knitter to do? I'm wondering if I need to alternate projects, one for me, one for you. Or do I allocate my knitting time? Or do I have one of each on the go at the same time.

Or am I over thinking it? Hey, at least I blogged two days in a row!

Time certainly does fly, doesn't it! I can't believe it has been so long since I've blogged (thanks for the not so gentle reminders Miss J and Miss Lilypily).

So much has happened and every time I felt like blogging, it was all bad stuff and I couldn't face writing. Well, that's my story! Here we have a pair of gorgeous socks for the wonderful CFA vollies. They are going to someone who helped during the recent tragedy. I used EZ's Woodsman's Socks pattern and it was a breeze. Particularly when using a 10ply yarn.

There's a group of us on Ravelry trying to make items for the CFA and SES, plus Friendship Blankets for those who lost so much during the fires.

Yay! After completing nearly 30 mini stockings, I finally finished off something adult size!

My Dream in Colour Shrug is done and I love it. I added an extra pattern repeat and didn't turn back the cuffs. When sleeves end at my elbows, I find I have Popeye issues (large forearms) so prefer shorter or longer. I will probably whip up another of these as I can see it will be very useful in sub tropics.

I had a bit of a dummy spit regarding the mini stockings(MSs). Now I know people who craft understand the value of hand made, and those who don't...well, don't! That's ok. I didn't expect the MSs to have a huge price tag on them, but was disappointed when I spotted them at the market. I was there at 9am and just felt the $2 was a little low.

I accept the seller must meet the market buyer's price and this was the last chance before Christmas to sell them. Also, it wasn't a craft market as such, which I think makes a huge difference. Anyway, I will definately be re-thinking any further handmade donations.

What a lazy blogger I've turned out to be! I'm absolutely disgusted with my recent form. No excuses...but at least I've got some knitting done.

This little beauty is one of about 30 I've made for charity. The pattern is a Jean Greenhow freebie (gotta love those) and made on 2 needles. It is extremely quick, each one taking only around 20 minutes, subject to decoration.

Anyway, I've stuffed them with lollipops and bagged them up so hopefully, they'll appeal to the children.

It was a bit like Spotty, but without the rude service. My quest to visit a LYS while on our holiday took us to a quaint, little village. The advertisement had read 'largest range' so I was keen to get there.

I soon discovered how they made that claim. If you ever have need for Magnum acrylic from the 1970s shade card, let me know. Lime green worked with brown and orange. An acquired taste in most circles, particularly if you've already lived through it once.

I've never seen so much Magnum, all lovingly displayed in family groups of colour. Actually, the families were so large they had second cousins visiting. I worked my way through the crocheted poncho display and onto the covered coat hangers and boottees.

By this stage I was hoping I hadn't dragged the family all this way simply to visit the resting place of 20th century yarn. Hang on...what was that? Right up the back in wooden stalls. Yarn. Sure, there was even more Magnum (who knew this much was ever spun?) but you must stock what you can sell.

There was also Bamboo, Jet, Country and Inca. Square wooden bays with an occasional piece of chipboard on the diagonal to split the colours. Did that look classy? No, I don't believe this train stopped at Taste Station. Yet, here was yarn, in the flesh, available for a squeeze.

Too many times I've chosed based on a 2cm sample and a few clicks of the mouse. I remember my fave yarn store in Melbourne. The entrance was more a hole in the wall rather than a door way. There was a narrow staircase leading down to what I always thought was the good stuff. Beautiful yanrs spun in Italy before it was fashionable. I can still recall making myself the most gorgeous jacket from a neutral yarn with a single red ply. Short rows formed the Mandarin collar. A single, leather button held the garter stitch creation together. Every where I wore this, I was asked where had it come from, did I really make it and was it difficult. I think I'd kill to find that pattern again.

Back to the yarn store. I check out the wooden stalls and discover 25% off all yarns. Then I spot the three tiered display of Sublime. Only a few shades left but I spin that sucker like a giant, calorie free cake stand with yarn dumplings as my cupcakes.

I did want a special yarn as a holiday souvenir and I'll certainly remember buying these little beauties. Do I know what I'll make? Not yet...but then, isn't that what Ravelry is for??

Yes, school hols have arrived yet again and don't we just love the chill factor?!? We saw WALL E last night and that was a fun movie. Today it was haircut time, then tomorrow we pack. Can you tell I'm really looking forward to this break?

On the knitting front, I've decided it is very important to make things for myself now and then. Things were running at 80% to charity, 15% to other people, and, well, you can guess the rest. I might even adopt the 'knit one, give one' mantra. I started working on Shalom but realised I was going to run out of yarn. So, I've switched over to Liesl and am using that scrummy yarn from Dyelicious.

This is a great little pattern, with heaps of variations written in the instructions. Well worth the cost. Unfortunately, I think I'll be a fair way through before we leave. Which leads me to that age old problem...knitting project packing selection!

I wonder where the locusts is?

Actually I know exactly where they is. I've just picked them up from school and brought them home for another round of 'how much food can we eat?'.

Spring is a time of reflection, a time to celebrate new life. I've come to realise I didn't give birth to children. Rather I hatched locusts and the plague has arrived. I wanted to shop less often and buy in bulk. I thought I'd purchased enough for a few weeks.

How wrong I was. The boys merely looked on it as a challenge. I believe their goal was for me to continue shopping weekly, but to purchase more items.

I wanted to check which species I have in residence but when I looked up the locust identification guide, there were my children's photos instead. I did a bit of research and discovered that experts believe this swarming behaviour is a result of over crowding within the group.

Maybe I just have too many children?!?

Trolley Love

Ever had one of those really good shopping trolleys? You know the type. After you've emptied your shopping into the boot, you want to hitch it up to the car and take it home. That way you've got it for the next time and know it is going to be a smooth ride.

Maybe it is just me but I really appreciate a good trolley. Wheels aligned, chrome still sparkles, no rust spots..no rubbish!

You can probably tell I've recently had the pleasure of driving such a vehicle. It was at KMart. I prefer to use one of their baskets but needed something larger for my new stash holders. (Stash not new, just the storage.)

There they are, artfully arranged. Or randomly placed so their little numbers can dry. I'm hoping this means I'll be able to find what I'm looking for. Yarn wise, not meaning of life. We all know the answer to that one is 42.

So now as I catalogue yarn in Ravelry, I can note its box number. I'm quite motivated to sort the stash Recently we had some work done that involved climbing into the manhole located above stash central. The Muggles thought they'd do the right thing and move part of the stash.

I never knew just what a frightening experience that could be. Plus, how much had the stash multiplied?!? I half expected them to find a couple of disoriented backpackers. I know there's alot of bags, they're just not 'sleeping' bags.

How appropriate! 'The Warranty with a difference' banner above the beautiful, classic car. Couldn't have planned it better..pity I've only just noticed the layout.

Yesterday we had arranged to visit the Guanaba South Coast Country Music Club's social day. Held the third Sunday of the month, this is a great place to listen to music or, put your name on the list and perform. There is also the option of singing. We didn't take up either offer and that's probably a good thing for the audience. We met up with a couple of other families and had a very relaxing afternoon.

Prior to that, and to insert some knitting related content, we called into the Pimpama Strawberry Farm. There I was able to see some mohair and a lovely pile of fibre. Unfortunately both items were still walking around on four legs, waiting to be spun.

Well it has happened. My index finger is now pixelated and looks like a relief map of the moon. Knitpicks interchangeables I love you, but our time is up for the moment.

Those pointy points have taken their toll. I'm moving on to blunty points and changing to Addis.

I'm a bit pleased with myself and really, I shouldn't be. This pattern is a piece of cake, so why all the fuss? Truly, I don't know where I get off sometimes.

Anyway, Odessa is off the needles and I think she's a beauty. I love the swirliness and the colour changes work at right angles to each other.The visual interest is very high...or have I just been sniffing way too many yarn fumes?!?

The lovely Miss D also whipped up another 14 caps to add to the collection. I'm not going to count them as part of my efforts...yet!

Yes, the blog does have a new look. I thought it was time for a change and I've tidied up too.

If doing the same thing over and over while expecting the result to change means you are insane, then sign me up, laminate that membership card and email me my first newsletter.

During my quest to make 26 chemo caps, I 've found I get bored very easily. Actually, way too easily for my liking. I decided to take a break from knitting Muppet Eyelashes and cast on Odessa. Thought I'd get all my jobs done, have a quiet drink with dinner, then gracefully retire and cast on.

I'll give you a brief, censored (language removed for the faint hearted), summary of the results:

A. Cast on 110 stiches, using circulars, finished the band, looked too big. Frogged

2. Cast on 80 stitches using circulars, did the band, started pattern rows, messed them up (missed a YO or two). Frogged.

iii. Cast on 90 stitches using DPNs. Looks ok and pattern under control.

BUT the pattern says work 2 plain rounds, 1 beaded, then 3 plain. I've done my 2 plain rounds and I'm over it. Already. Maybe I'm like my knitting buddy Marg who just 'gets a licence to drive' a pattern then has had enough.

Or perhaps I'm totally insane with a pinch of KADD (knitters' ADD) thrown in for good measure. Seems to me there is a fine line between persistence and pass me the scissors.

Do Ya Feel Lucky, Yarn? Well, do Ya??

I went a bit Dirty Harriet with some yarn yesterday. Turns out it didn't feel so lucky.

The yarn was patchy. Supposedly 10ply, but in places would struggle to be a decent 4 ply. I'm certain it was just a rogue ball as I've used this yarn before and not had a problem. However, a price had to be paid and I'm guessing the deposit was my sanity.

I took my small swatch and placed it on the bench. Then I got the rest of the ball and made sure it watched while I cut up my sample. I wanted it to learn a lesson. Similar to the one in that old joke about the naughty parrot who gets put in the freezer for bad behaviour. One look at the chook in there and voila, reformed parrot.

Anyway, back to the yarn (hehe). Mr Fitknit moved to the other side of the bench and asked ever so nicely if I wouldn't mind keeping away from sharp implements. I dumped the sliced swatch in the bin and looked at the remaining ball. I'm sure I saw it wince.

That evening I cast on with the remainder. You will be pleased to hear the yarn is now behaving.

Thought I'd share a pic of the June Charity of the Month collection. I was lucky enough to grab a spot on the Knit 4 Charities calendar when another charity found it no longer required knitted items (how good is that?!?).

I collected items for Bonnie Babes and in this photo there are hundreds of blankets, baptismal gowns and burial wraps. The work that has gone into these is just amazing. Knitters, and all crafters for that matter, are just the best in my book.

On the home front, Mr Fitknit took DS3 off to a hockey tournament up north. DS3 is particularly excited to be going on a road trip without certain other brothers. They rang last night and are having a great time. Hope they wear their beanies (hand made by Fitknit) today!

After yesterday's outburst, I decided I really would try to blog more often. So here goes.

It is Remembrance Month over at Knit 4 Charities and I'm on the chemo caps. It is three months tomorrow since Teresa passed away yet feels like the blink of an eye.

To honour her courage, strength and life, I'm going to try and make a cap for every year she was here. That's 26. I've made 2 so far. This one is my own pattern. It is acrylic and we all know how much I would prefer to run a marathon rather than use this yarn, but it's not about me!

Guess I'd better go and knit now. Hopefully I'll be back soon :)

I hadn't planned on blogging today but the pressure (yes, you Miss J) got to me. I certainly know I'm under the pump when a 'friend' says she needs for me to update my blog on a regular basis because when her work annoys her, she clicks and has a momentary escape over here.
Happy?!?

I could leave it there but won't because I'm not nearly as p*&%d off as that reads! I whipped up this little number for my boys' school sports. This is always, without fail, held on the coldest day of the year. Field events require a walk across the oval to the area where your child will attempt to remove heads with a discus.

So I made my hat, felted it, wore it, loved it. I believe there was a lot of hat-envy going on. The pattern is from the wonderful Sarah Bradberry's book, The Any Yarn, Any Hat. I got the downloadable version and love it!

Dreams can come true

Until last night.

I'm working on a scarf for a friend who lost her hubby a few weeks ago. She is way too young to be a widow and isn't really a shawl wearer, so I thought a scarf might be an idea.

Anyway, last night my dream went like this. I'm wrapping someone (I don't know who it is) in a shawl, placing it on their shoulders when I notice a few threads hanging. " Oh," I say, "I'll come back later and weave those in for you. Sorry about that."

As I step back from the shawl-wearing person, I notice the article is still on an enormously long circular knitting needle. I haven't even cast off.

I think I need a coffee.

Finished objects abound! First of all, I whipped up this little beauty in Vintage Hues. I used Ann Budd's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns (there's a great investment if ever) and made the yoke sweater, obviously into a cardy. Personally, I think it is one of the most useful things I've made...except for the Peter Heater perhaps.

I shortened the sleeves to 3/4 length as I always wear them pushed up anyway. Just saves me the effort. Knit in the round, garter st borders easy peasy.

I've also whipped up a metre scarf for the Aussie World's Longest Scarf Record attempt. Yes, it was incredibly boring! However, once all the scarves are in, they will be sewn into blankets for the homeless. What a great idea.

A chemo cap flew off the hook rounding off my productive week. Now, time to cast on again!

Yay! Finished. Mr Fitknit loves it, even though there are those who have called him Grandpa (the fact that he actually is a grandfather seems to have escaped them), I think he looks hot..in the good sense.

This was a nice, easy mock cable. I used Spotty's Entwine and was delighted to find only one knot out of the 10 balls used. The pattern is from Paton's Inca book (the one where all the male models look like they should still be in school...and probably are)

Well, it is all done and I love it (hope she does too!). The yarn is lovely and soft, blocked beautifully. I love how the shawl will stay put on the shoulders. Actually, I'm so impressed I might even make one for myself.

I've decided to make a shawl that will sit properly on the shoulders without making the wearer feel like they are doing the equivalent of a 'hairflick' everytime there is a need to adjust. I found this one on knittingdaily and so far it is knitting up beautifully. The yarn is gorgeous yet discontinued, Bendy Caprice.

Today I discovered if I ask my 10yo to do something more than once, he will request I stop mothering him. So what am I supposed to do with my day now? My 13yo is being so nice I've asked numerous times if he has a detention coming up. Then, I discover my copy of 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff' in his bedroom.

Maybe it works!

You may recall some time ago I made beret for a friend's daughter who wished to go to Paris. Her DD had cancer and at the time, things were looking up.

Sadly, Miss T lost her battle early Saturday morning. She was so courageous and will be missed forever.

As I sat with her parents yesterday, we cried then we laughed as we had to break open the 'emergency' pack of tissues. Amazingly life goes on...world keeps turning.

Sometimes I wish it would just stop for a little while so we could catch our breath.

The back was a breeze, then I did a simple 1x1 rib for the armholes and neckline. He looks super cute wearing it and was delighted his team won yesterday. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Magpies but appreciate a cute looking baby when I see one.

These would be the saddest little items I think I've ever made. An Angel Wrap and Burial Gown for Bonnie Babes. They fit in the palm of my hand.

I remember thinking when I first started knitting for charity that I would never make these. But when I was approached by Bonnie Babes, I didn't feel I could ask others to help if I wasn't prepared to make them myself. So, I did what any self respecting knitter would do and I cast on.

I think my next project had better be the Collingwood Football jumper I volunteered to finish. My DIL's mother started a little sleeveless jumper for our grandson. Unfortunately, her arthritis kicked in and she couldn't finish it. Mind you,she's done the front and started the back! I'd better get stuck into it before he grows too much bigger. The pattern is a yellowed newspaper cutting. I wish I could put a date on it..possibly from the 70s given the hairstyles!

I was inspired by Miss Ohio's Tower of Berets and thought I'd create my own leaning tower. It reminded me of that great children's book 'Caps for Sale' (by Esphyr Slobodkina) and all those busy monkeys, which in turn reminds me of home and school holidays!

Anyway, I have a baker's dozen there. Some knitted, some crocheted. Some for the homeless, some chemo caps. Some wool, some acrylic. Really, something for everyone!

Battery Exhausted

You know the story. Everything is set up for the photo shoot. You've removed the ugly from the background. Ok, light's good, no distractions, turn on the camera, point and....oh. Message "battery exhausted". Not low, not running low, but exhausted!

So, what I was going to blog about now seriously lacks impact. I'll try and tell you a little about it anyway. On Saturday I went to the Gold Coast Craft Fair with the lovely Miss J (who didn't want to appear on my blog but there you go!). We had a ball, checking out yarns, crochet hooks, patterns and some seriously weird looking baby things. Please don't ask as I have no idea what they were about either.

We met Jenny King and Prudence Mapstone, both so inspirational you want to drop everything and start a project. Prudence's talk was amazing and I've now dabbled in the freeform style. We also managed to buy a considerable amount of their stock!

Miss J was completely thrown by freeform crochet. I don't think I've ever seen her so uncomfortable. She was like a tightrope walker without a net! Then we simply had to make a few purchases for Miss D. She wasn't able to attend so we decided to take the fair to her. We got Prudence's book (and had it signed..significant as Miss D is a writer), yarn by the bucket load, a crochet hook and project. By Saturday night Miss D had already hooked up a storm.

So, as soon as the battery gets over its exhaustion, pics will be posted.

I can't believe how quickly time flies. Zoom...there's another week gone.

I've been knitting a burial gown for Bonnie Babes and it feels like it is taking forever. I may be getting caught up in the emotion of it all and that's why I have no pics to post.

I have made an important discovery. There is such a thing as a premail. That's the email you get from someone telling you they are sending you an email. Yes, as a matter of fact, I do receive premails. Annoying you ask? The answer is also yes!

Just for the record, my dog sends weemails.

A wonderful week

Sometimes it all comes together beautifully. Like this week. I finished my bag. It is from Yarn magazine, and is the perfect size. But that wasn't what fixed my week. I started a little craft group and our first meeting was Monday. Four of us turned up and as a first go I thought that was brilliant.

Within 24 hours I received an email from a lady representing Bonny Babes here on the coast. This wonderful person goes into hospitals and assists families who have lost babies. She tries to give the family special treasures...a footprint, a photo. I don't know how she does it and she is amazing.

The group offers burial gowns for the babies and Angel wraps for the tiny ones who don't make it. Anyway, her cupboard is bare. So I thought I'd add her to our list of charities and while I was at it, mention her on the Knit 4 Charities group site. The next morning I had received many offers of help.

Brilliant, hey?!? But...it gets better. One of the charities of the month listed for June has let us know they no longer need any items.

I was offered the spot. I'm blown away by this. So much help can be sorted in such a small space of time. Craftsters are simply the best people.

Miss D was there on Monday and started my on another craft addiction (like I need one). This beanie is the result.

Am I impressed with myself....you bet!

Oh and if anyone would like to knit an item for Bonny Babes, please let me know and I'll point out some patterns and other bits of information.

My poor neglected blog

It has been a little too long since I blogged. I could blame Ravelry, but I won't. I've been lucky enough to be given the 'You Inspire Me' award twice...yes, incredible isn't it? Many thanks to Teri and Raches for their lovely comments.

I've taken along time to blog again because I was trying to list who inspired me. Not that I struggled to find anyone, as the blogs I love to read are all amazing. No, my problem was reducing the list to 10. TEN! How am I to do that???

So instead I've decided that every blog I've visited and left a comment (and you know who you are) has inspired me.

And so has this. I love being around to witness history.

A friend's daughter has a life long dream to visit Paris. She plans on rocking Europe in September. My friend is a knitter who now suffers with arthritis, so I offerred to whip this little beauty along. It is made in Bendy Classic 12ply, using Wendy Bernard's Last Minute Purl Beret pattern.

A quick easy knit with a classic finish. I hope she likes it.

If at first you don't succeed....

This is my second attempt at this pattern. Absolutely nothing wrong with the pattern, in fact I adore it. Nothing wrong with the yarn of my original choice. Except the pattern and the yarn could not cohabitate.

The first attempt was with a variegated yarn, pretty in its green and brown glory. I thought it would be great for a leafy pattern as that is what the colours sung. But no, as any experienced knitter will tell you, sometimes the pattern gets lost in the colours.

I couldn't see the leaves for the forest.

It's not a rat! It just looks like one. Inspired by Ravelry, I made up this little guy. I've had heaps of fun placing it on my kids' shoulders then screaming (OK, school holidays and I've got to make my own fun).

Speaking of school, I had a parcel from there yesterday and can't believe it starts back again so soon. Why does time fly? Where does it go? Maybe I'm on the 30 day diet and have already lost 15 days???

Christmas Knitting

Xmas knitting finally finished! I wasn't planning on making anything, but when DS1 asked ever so nicely for a skull & crossbones guitar strap cover...well, what is a mother to do?

Made from Country 8ply, this was quick and easy to make. It fits the strap beautifully, which always makes for a happy knitter.

We've already had one Christmas Day with half the family travelling south for the 25th. Seeing as the date itself was chosen to align with other festivals, I've never had an issue celebrating on an alternate date. Lucky really!

Look what arrived in the mail today. My parcel from my tea cosy swap pal, Roceal. A gorgeous cosy in handspun, gum-leaf dyed yarn, 2 coasters knit from organic cotton, a box of T2 English Breakfast and the Biscuit and Slice Bible.

I'm sooooo lucky! Now I'm off to test the tea and cosy!

I noticed that I forgot to link the egg cosy pattern so here it is. Thank you for all the lovely comments regarding the tea cosy swap. It was great fun working out just the right bits and pieces to include in my parcel to Rose Red. What a relief the tea cosies fit...phew!

I haven't visited my blog for a while. That Christmas Tree counter frightened me away. Actually, that's the only decoration I've managed to put up so far. Not that should be surprising as I'm pretty sure it was the same issue last year.

Maybe I could just cut and paste the December 2006 entries. OMG I'm so lazy!

I couldn't resist making these for my teacosy swap pal. They are made from sock yarn extra bits (not scraps) and are very quick and easy. They are also extremely cute.

I think I'm mentally broken this morning from all of the activity of the last week of school. Mr Fitknit asked me last night why they cram so much into this final week of school. My answer was it is a bit tricky to have the Christmas concert in February, and difficult to hand out academic awards at the start of the year.

I need more coffee.

you buy the 60 second dry time nail polish and quickly do your toe nails while still wearing your sandals. Yes, it is that time of the year. I can't believe it goes so crazy and fast. Actually, I can believe it because it is the same every year. The boys finish school on Friday...yes 30th November. I'm frantically cramming so much into their last week. You know, the important things like coffee mornings, ladies' lunches...all high flying stuff!!

I did manage to cast off a few things. First of all, my lovely bag. This used up a whole heap of cheap 8ply purchased from Spotty years ago. I think the bag cost me a grand total of $5.50. I used the yarn doubled and it felted incredibly well. The pattern is here.
This is the completed cosy and mat for the tea cosy swap. I'd make both again but would use wool, mainly for insulation purposes. This is from Jo Sharp's Knit book.
Finally, I made a little turkey cloth for an American friend who does get homesick at this time of year. I used Heirloom cotton so it is lovely and soft. The pattern came from Knitting Knonsense. I also made one of Michigan, her home state, but it doesn't photograph well.

Frayed Knots

I've nearly finished my tea cosy swap items. The swap is on Ravelry and runs until after Christmas, but there is no time like the present to get things on and off the needles.

On the left we have a teapot mat, from Jo Sharp's Knit (Issue 2). Now, I love the pattern, very quick and effective, but...the yarn. Now that's a whole other story.

I used Desert Garden Aran Cotton, colour way, Tibet. Great colour, and the finished fabric is soft with beautiful drape. Knitting it, however, leaves alot to be desired.
Honestly, the thing splits more often than Torvill and Dean on ice (rink, not the drug). At one stage I couldn't figure out where the splits were coming from until I realised I was just catching one ply from the stitch below. And doesn't the yarn HATE to be frogged!

I believe this yarn actually frays if you simply look at it. And don't get me started on the number of knots in each ball.

Sensitive soul that it is...wait until it gets on a teapot, that will sort it out.

Muggles and their uses

While Mr Fitknit has been heard to utter the word 'skein', he isn't really at one with the knit. He is extremely supportive and...tolerant of my addiction but doesn't get involved at any level. Last night, that all changed.

This is a long term plan that you might like to apply to any muggle situation you are facing. Be patient.

Step One:
Encourage your muggle to become heavily involved in some activity outside of the home. In our case, my mugglets play cricket, so I was incredibly supportive of his decision to manage the team. Knowing full well that he can't do things by halves, this fell right into my cunning plan.

Step Two:
Now this is where you have to be patient. Wait out the first season and half of the second. Yes, I do realise that is about 18 months worth, but truly, the result is priceless.

Step Three:
Have all of your equipment ready to go, because the opportunity can easily be missed.

Step Four:
On a day when your muggle will be partaking in their special activity, keep them very busy. You want him/her/them extremely tired.

Step Five:
At the end of the day, allow your muggle to settle into their favourite chair and give them the tv remote. Stay alert. Watch them and before you know it, they will fall asleep.

Step Six:
Quickly drag out that tangled yarn and tie one end to their hand. So long as it isn't some terribly scratchy yarn, they will not even stir.

Now you have the perfect anchor for your yarn and can wind it into the ball you desire.

(Apologies to Mr Fitknit, but it really did help my sort out my mess last night.)

Hooray, hooray, hooray...this is why I don't like to knit the same pattern more than once. It takes weeks to finish even little (well, it's all relative) things like these. Do you like my little sheep tag? I've decided to write the care instructions on these and attach to my FOs. The tags are from the newsagent and the stamp is from here.
The intended recipient wanted something fun so I hope smiley faces, strawberries, sequins and glitter will do the job.
All of these are a C cup and I altered the brilliant pattern to start from the outside and work in, mainly because it was easier on my hands.

Now, I'm swatching for my tea cosy swap. Love it!

Tea Cosy Swap

For the benefit of my wonderful swap pal, here is my teapot. Pictured with a teabag in a not very creative pose, this pot does make excellent tea. It was given to me about 25 years ago and has done well to still be in one piece.

How interesting the looks when I say I'm in a Tea Cosy Swap! I still giggle about it, yet can see the practical side. I have come up with some bits and pieces for my pal and hope they turn out as I imagine.

We flew to Melbourne for the weekend and I faced the two hour flight without knitting in hand. Fortunately, the plane had personal tv units so it certainly helped pass the time. I think we took the sun with us because it was very hot on Sunday.

I managed to finish the lining of one Titbit and have 2 more to go and I'm done on that request. Then, I have the rest of my neverending queue to attack.

My boys play a song over and over. I think it is from the Disney High School Musical or something similar. It is stuck in my brain and appropriate for my knitting. I have no idea of the title...just the chorus.
"Stick to the stuff you know".

So I did and made 2 beanies. Late November I'm going to a day where volunteers connect with the homeless and I thought I'd better have something to donate! Well, it is a start.

I'm loving Ravelry. How great is it to check out what others have done with a particular yarn and have all the info at your fingertips! Love it!

We are in silly storm season and have had one every day this week. The sky has been amazing...deepest purple, strange looking clouds (I'm sure they are normal, they just look strange).

The boys are back at school and I'm still way too relaxed from the holiday to get too worked up about anything...which is making it difficult to do things like, I don't know, um, school lunches perhaps, dinner, ironing of uniforms. Nevermind.

I wanted to add pictures that did justice to the beauty of New Zealand. Above is one of the most spectacular beaches I've ever seen. Glorious.
The accommodation we had booked for this particular night was above a take away food place. I had my doubts, but when I got to the top of the stairs and turned back, this was the view.
I had to take a pic of this sign as we didn't believe Mr Fitknit when he pronounced (in Aussie) the name of the road. We went back the next day to take a photo.

Home again!

Ahhh, New Zealand, land of sheep, goats and bunny shearing. What a great place to visit for a fibre nut. I lasted 3 days before mentioning my desire to fondle some yarn. Naturally, knitting on the place is O U T so I read a book on Islamic Women. No, I'm not sure of the connection either.

I fell in love with Possum yarn. Not something I expected to do, but it is soooo soft and warm. I also saw a couple of wild goats on the side of the road and contemplated stuffing them in the 'tucker bag' but remembered how tough our customs department can be.

I finished a sock and as I'm now IN Ravelry (as fitknit...yep, I was up all night thinking that one up!!) I found a group where the single sock gets the status it so deserves!

I'll update with pics as soon as I've finished washing all the clothes.

Off the needles

Well, my shawl is finished.
I just thought I'd get the pattern up as Michelle was interested.
There were three patterns I used to get the final product but the best info came from this one.

The only changes I made were to put in alternating strips of garter and stockinette to give some texture. Also, when it came to mitering the border, I added wraps to the short rows. I like the colours pooling around the edge as the body is messy with its randomness.

DS1 is our model, even though he is only 13 and we aren't supposed to use such young ones on the Gold Coast. Me thinks he regrets growing to the same height as his mother.

This was very therapeutic knitting and I'm glad I took on this project.

Very quick, very easy and very effective.

Go with the flow

This isn't what I planned to knit. This isn't the yarn I wanted to use. This isn't the pattern I would pick.

Somehow it all fell into place and into my hands. Friends of ours lost their son at the end of last month. He was just 21. We have attended many services to celebrate his life with the most recent being held on Sunday.

We sat opposite his parents, our friends. I was struck by their dignity, grace and grief. What can you say when all you want to do is hold them and stop the pain.

But you can't protect them from their grief. I came home Sunday knowing I had to do something, anything. I sat at the computer and somehow managed to get onto a list of shawl patterns...not something I knit. I found one that was straight forward yet interesting. It's just a basic design starting at the neck edge with 4 increases per row. The little yarn overs at the center make a string of tiny butterflies fluttering down the back.

Then I went through the stash and this lovely mohair blend (Cleckheaton Studio) was in my hands. Since then I've been working on the shawl, thinking about this family and trying to send them peace. I hope it helps them in some small way.

The sock club that is! I signed up for Ecoyarns Tofutsies sock club. There is a new yarn every two months with a new pattern. They also provide a link to the yahoo group where the sock designers hang out. How great is that for pattern support?

This first lot may be one of my travelling companions in NZ - small, light yet time consuming project.

Thanks for all the comments regarding the dangers of knitting. I wonder if there are more injuries or just that we are aware of them because of the internet and our level of communication.

Wristful Thinking

Yesterday, while blog surfing, I came across two entries relating to hand/wrist injuries. This concerned me as I have often wondered if there is any long term damage done by knitting like a banshee. My other concern is as knitting bloggers, are we getting a double whammy of wrist torture?

I googled "Knitting injuries" and came up with 4360 entries. Now, even taking out all the rubbish links, that still leaves a heap of comments on this I thought sedate but now believe dangerous craft.

There are some amusing ones, such as here and more scientific discussions appear on the Knit Science podcast (Episode 12, aptly titled 'Watch your Hands').

There is a really good article on the whys and hows at Sheep to Shawl with links to hand exercises (warm ups for knitters). Note that some of the links shown don't work.

I think I'll be printing off the Berocco exercises as my wish is that my knitting needles have to be prised out of my cold, lifeless hands....or they could just bury me with my final UFO.

Bits and Pieces

Turns out my green vest is wanting to grow into a cardy. I have been able to add three quarter length sleeves but did it by picking up stitches and knitting down so I could check on yarn availability. So far so good. I have needles everywhere because I'm also knitting the neckband at the same time. Very scary when I grab the wrong needle and knit a sleeve to the neckband!

I've made another Titbit. The lady who received the last 6 sent me one of those emails that makes you cry. She really moved me and I understand a bit better the value of this project. I enjoy making these because the pattern is simple, it is very portable and I have a secret weapon....very short DPNs!!

I'm not collecting Bras for Cancer this year. Turns out the radio station is no longer able to send them overseas so they would end up at the tip. The donation ofaround $60,000 is still made, but we are no longer collecting bras. It is a bit disappointing because they made such a great display at our big fundraising Pink Christmas held in October.

The “Knitting Has Forced Me to Seek Medical Attention” Badge (Level One) – In which the recipient has been forced to seek the advice of a medical doctor, nurse, or alternative healthcare professional for injuries sustained as a result of knitting.

This badge was received for using double 8ply and trying to knit too fast. I needed a massage because I couldn't raise my right arm above shoulder height. I looked a treat trying to hang the clothes on the line....it was more 'throwing' than hanging.

Yes, a miracle has occurred. I finished a whole pile of knitting. Six caps off to Peter Mac and 6 Titbits for a lady in my knitting group. I'll apologise now for the use of eyelash yarn. It was soft...really, really soft.

I don't know where the time goes..actually, I do. It gets swallowed up by three little boys, sorry, that should read 2 little boys and one teenager. Also heavy on the time consumption is my life as a knitter.

A wise blogger once commented that you can knit...or blog but you can't do both. Well, not at the same time, anyway. I thought I should knit something to blog about. I've made 4 caps for Peter Mac hospital but had trouble loading the pic so you'll just have to trust me on that one. That's our charity of the month for August.

We are off to NZ in a few weeks and coming from the tropical north, I thought I'd better whip up a snazzy beret for myself. As I don't have alot of hair (and we all know who's to blame for that one, don't we!!!) beanies tend to make me look like a middle aged wanna be from the 'hood. Possibly a good look for some, but not the one I'm after.

Instead, I whipped up this. I used just over one skein of Jo Sharp's Silkroad Aran Tweed (col Jewel/124) and adapted Wendy's pattern to suit. It now needs a few ends sewn in and a good old fashioned blocking and I'm ready for my (not so) close up!

Listening to Brenda's podcast and having been a Girl Guide, I took it upon myself to earn a badge.

The “MacGyver” Badge (Level One) - The recipient must demonstrate clever use of a non-knitting tool in a knitting-related scenario. For instance, recipient has used paper clips as stitch markers, or successfully whittled and then utilized bamboo skewers as dpns.

I'm sharing this one with Miss D. Her award is for making knitting needles from sharpened wooden spoons. Mine is for using a chopstick and slicing up a plastic bag to make yarn because there was nothing else. Not even acrylic.

Simpsonize Me!

All my boys can talk about is wanting to see the new Simpson's Movie. Sad...but true.

We will get there, one day, but for the moment, they can have their mother as a Simpson.

Vest and Snobbery

Two fronts done and half the back. This is my Jet Bargain Yarn Sleeveless (depending on how long the yarn lasts) Cardy. I love the way this is knitting up and only hope the FO is as pleasing.

On the subject of yarn, I think I've become even more of a yarn snob, if that is possible. My problem began when I started knitting Bendy Classic. I really appreciate the softness of this fibre while knitting and the finished fabric is delicious.

Then I started on my Hug Me Tight and decided to use Bendy Alpaca. I've knit about 100grams of the ball and remain amazed that it isn't covered in Body Shop Foundation Number 5 from where I've held it to my face.

There is no hope for me now. I tried to knit baby clothes with acrylic, but they just grew into small adult items in my hands. I'm going to have to remove all such yarns from my stash.

There is no going back.

Necessity...

..the mother of finding the right knitting pattern.

We took DS2 and DS3 to play a hockey exhibition match on Saturday night. As it is winter (as much as we get) here and hockey fields are open areas, it was extremely cold to watch them play for a total of 10 minutes. They were the half-time entertainment for another match which featured former Olympic players.

As both junior teams were from the same club, it was a win-win.

Naturally, I wore my coat. Now I love to wear coats, but HATE the irritation I get on my neck from the wool. I usually wear a scarf to stop the rubbing and did so for this event. My scarf was long and I doubled it over. However, as we were walking around, the ends got caught and I nearly tripped over.

Hence my problem. I needed something to be a buffer between neck and coat, but short so my balance wasn't threatened. I remembered a pattern in my new birthday knitting book, Knit 2 Together (Ullman & Clark) that would work. I dug it out as soon as we got home, dived into the stash and surfaced with a skein of Silkroad Aran (Jo Sharp).

Four episodes of Frasier (another birthday gift) later, my neck warmer was complete. I wore it Sunday and think it is one of the best things I've made. Quick, economical and effective. What more could I want...except maybe another one in a different colour!

Experience is a Teacher

Thanks for your good wishes on my Nanahood! It is really nice to cuddle a newborn, and hand him back to his parents!

We went to the hospital yesterday to see GS1. He is adorable...well, what else was he ever going to be?? I've just moved the photos from my camera to the computer and learned a very important lesson (see, my day has not been wasted).

In the pics of me holding the babe, I have him where you would normally hold such a young one. I'm looking down at him... you can guess what's happened...I pulled my chin back towards my neck...and BINGO, I have SIX chins!!!

My MIL (&FIL) came with us (being brand new Great GPs). It is from her experience I have had my lesson:

1. Hold the baby up higher, roughly at your shoulder level, so that your elbow is straight out, NOT down.

2. Gaze lovingly at the babe because you don't have to pull your head back to see him and create what will now be known as a 'Turtle neck'.

3. Smile for the camera.

Ahh, so much to learn....

Baby hat...done! The recipe for this one came from Knitting for Peace, by Betty Christiansen. A lovely book I received for my birthday.

The hat is knit in Cleckheaton Country 8ply and, fortunately, is the same shade as Bendy Classic 12ply. Fortunate because I am knitting a Baby Kimino to go with it.

I was also lucky enough to receive Knit 2 Together and Zen and the Art of Knitting. I've already selected a gorgeous shrug to knit from Knit 2 and have ordered Alpaca from Bendy. I know I'm on a yarn diet and a vow to knit from the stash...but it is my birthday and I'm using birthday money so it is entirely justified.

It's all my fault. I take full responsibility.

I'm sitting in the study with my teenager. He's playing the same song over and over and over...I want to scream. And yes, I do remember doing this to my parents...in the car!

I've asked him to change the song. "Yes, Mum! Don't nag!" was the response. Even though I'd only asked the once.

Change it he did...to something that may have be called 'music' prior to the dog getting it, chewing it up and $#@^& it out.

So, lesson learned. Don't wish too hard for what you want, because you just might get it!

On a so much more productive note, I killed a computer. Well, it is an achievement. I think I have sexy fingers, because everything I touch gets..... The most darling husband in the world (yes, he does sometimes read this) went and bought me a new one. However, I haven't loaded all my programs on so no pics as yet.

Knitting report:
I have finished a baby hat. One of those squarish ones with pom poms on the corners. V.cute.
My felted slippers still need more felting and non-slip bottoms (the slippers, not me)
My lime green vest has two fronts done and back started (loving Jet!)
Finished and posted off 4 beanies for the homeless.

Thanks so much for all the lovely birthday wishes. It was a great birthday and I feel so much wiser, yet no older!

Life

I've been a very slack blogger, once again. I did, however, have a birthday. I'm sure that counts for something!

There were knitterly gifts received (pics will come...promise) and a surprise party had (thanks, Mr Fitknit).

I sit here with tears in my eyes. I've always been the sort of person people tell things. You know, inner most secrets, that sort of stuff. Well, I've got the outlaws staying because we are awaiting the arrival of our first grandchild and their first great-grandchild. Sometimes in the afternoon, I sit with MIL and she tells me stories of her life.

And what a life it is.

I'm not really at liberty to tell her story, but think I will start to write things down for my children, her grandchildren, so they have a better understanding of why certain things are so important to this family. Here is a woman, raised in an orphanage because her mother died at 26 and her father remarried, beaten by nuns because she said she had brothers and a sister, didn't know when her birthday was for many years...

And do you know what? There is not a bitter bone in her body.

She got felted!

The lovely pic to the left shows the tissue box sized slippers. Clearly way too big for me and extremely frightening for my first shot at felting.

However, my children often tell me persistence is one of the keys to success (yep, they do learn this stuff in school) so, persist I did.

My washer is a Fisher and Paykel. I have since discovered that they are known to be too gentle for felting. Obviously whoever believes that has never met my beautiful delicate woollen jumpers and my husband. That might be enough said on that subject, seeing as it all happened 12 years ago. Still carrying the baggage!
So I began the felting. It seemed to take forever, what with the constant checking of size and the fact that I started this at 5pm ON A SCHOOL NIGHT (what was I thinking) and the couple (OK, 'few') chardonnays downed during the process.

Then I discovered I had four of those little laundry balls. Well, that got those suckers moving. Talk about nearly instant felt!

The pattern is a Fibre Trends one (AC 14 - Felt Ballet slippers), the yarn, Cascade 220 (less than 2 skeins). I liked the pattern as the yarn was used single strand, rather than double like many other slipper designs. I'm currently making a pair for myself in the plain, strapless version, using Bendigo Rustic...from the stash!

So, another project finished (I don't get to write that very often) and about to be presented to my DIL. If her dogs destroy them, I will be most displeased.

On the subject of pleasure, and I really wish I hadn't written that, Mr D, the recipient of the, um, Peter Heater, was most pleased. And that is more than enough information on that topic.

Contrasts

Variety is the spice of life...and of knitting. But we all know that, don't we?

This week I've finished a couple of projects that contrast quite nicely.

I had been looking for padded coat hangers for ages. Couldn't find anything, not even ones I hated.

So, I did what any self respecting knitter would do and started making them myself. This is the first one. Easy, quick, practical, well-fitting...what more could I want!

I'm not sure how well this one will fit its intended recipient. Miss D sent me an email with a picture of a number of, let's say, chilly men, wearing warmers. She added, I'm thinking tongue in cheek, 'if I gave you the wool, would you make me one?'.

As we are having lunch tomorrow, I thought I'd give her a surprise. The notation on the card will read:
"Now that you're getting older
And the nights are getting colder,
Nothing could be neater,
Than this little Peter Heater"

So, that's my knitting for the week! One of the patterns comes from Dangliebits and the other from the Paton's Big Book of Small Patterns. Can you work out which one is from where?

E-Bargain

I love a bargain...well, who doesn't???

My latest purchase, via ebay, was 15 sets of short DPNs.

The winning bid was 99cents. In my world, that's what they cost. Mr Fitknit disagrees. Just because I paid $20 in postage and handling, all of a sudden they cost $20.99!!!

I can't believe it. I believe I have a bargain. 99cents...15 sets of needles.

Further to the often strange way my mind works, I have been tagged. I just need to go and check what I have to do for this one, so go and put the kettle on and I'll be back in a sec.

OK, I was tagged by the lovely Librarylass (ballysaxter) and have to now list 7 random things about myself.

1. This isn't random. I'm not the sort of person who is prepared to list off 7 things about myself without putting in some thought.

2. I wear 'rose-coloured' glasses because I don't want to see the negative part of any situation.

3. I hate talking on the phone. Always have. Speak to me in person or via email.

4. I really like girly frills but know there is no way I can wear them!

5. I love to knit but am unlikely to wear what I make. No, I don't understand why, either.

6. It is the thrill of the chase that gets me motivated. What's that?? Someone needs some slippers? OK, I'll spend hours finding the pattern and the yarn. I'll cast it on....then all interest is lost. Sad, but true.

Jet is on the needles! This is the bargain yarn from The One Letter Mart. The actual pattern is for a three quarter sleeve cardy, but I won't have enough yarn for that.

I'll be making the slightly modified sleeveless vest version. This bit is the left front..unless I muck it up, then it will be the right front.

And of course, because it is Jet, it is flying on the needles...OK sorry about the pun.

I also have a question for you. When counting finished objects, does one sock count as a FO because really, it is finished. Or do I have to complete the pair? Or is it a matter of names? If I say I'm knitting socks, then surely each ONE counts as a FO. I only need wait for two if I'm going to knit a PAIR.

Do you think I'm over thinking it?

Well, the Bendy site is up and running. It looks pretty good, too. As much as I don't really like their patterns, it's great that they provide all the yarn requirement details if you do want to buy them.

I'm also fascinated how they can already have a page of FAQs!

Proof of Knitting

Although I've been distracted by knitting reading goodness, I have picked up the pins and produced a few stitches here and there. Above, in its purple glory, is my ribby vest. I've finished the front section up to the armhole shaping. I've now got to find the directions to finish it. Bad knitter.
I'm not really sure what this is and whether it will stay in its current form or take a dip in the frog pond. The pattern was for a 'lace sampler shrug'. Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with the pattern, yarn or finished fabric, I just don't think it is 'me'. Project status: on hold.
My nearly finished beret. This is the one I was going to have completed for the great shave, which was 5 weeks ago. Another deadline goes flying by. The yarn is lovely and soft, so this one will go in the charity chemo cap bag.

Ahhh, nice to have at least completed a blog entry....now, to get some knitting finished!

I love parcels...mail...anything knitting related!

This week's arrivals are the Bendigo Mills shade card for 2007/08, the new Yarn mag, No Sheep for You, and Fitted Knits.

First off, the shade card. They have made a few changes this year, like HALVING the Harmony range...no more Lime :( There are new bright colours in the baby wool which I guess is good.

The Yarn mag is definately one I buy for the articles. I simply can't see myself making any of their patterns. A bit harsh, I know, but that's a my own personal preference.

No Sheep for You is the book based on 'fibers that never had four legs'. Living in a sub-tropical climate, I think this book will be really useful because wool is often too hot, even on the coldest days (statement subject to dispute depending length of time living in QLD). No Sheep contains 21 patterns from jumpers to hats and scarves.

Fitted Knits...what can I say! I think my copy is already covered in drool (sorry!). The book begins with instructions on how to fit your knits, adjusting the patterns and knowing your measurements. The patterns are graded on difficulty and use yarns from silk to cotton, wool and tencel and all the blends in between. Absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks so much to Nat for mentioning the Book Depository and their wonderful free postage (this took less than 2 weeks to get here from the UK).

Now all I have to do is finish off all of my other WIPS so I can cast on....or I could just cast on, couldn't I???

I'm fascinated how the sky can look so different at the same time. This pic is taken looking south, the next, facing north.

Something else that is amazing...I've done a heap of knitting this week. It's a bit cooler now making working with wool a whole lot more comfortable. I've nearly finished the front of the rib vest. I can't believe how many times I've mucked this up, given that it is just 2 x 2 rib! Nevermind. At least it didn't end up diving in the frog pond.

I've also managed to swatch the stash-diet busting bargain yarn (Hmmm, would have been so much quicker to simply type in Jet). All in all, a great week for knitting!

Another week...another hairstyle!
I went to show my hairdresser the photos from the great shave and she shoved me in the chair, trimmed off the bits growing at right angles, and slapped on the paint. Hence, my magenta scalp!

So I'm in Kmart and happen upon some yarn...as you do! Nice, green yarn in an alpaca blend. Then it gets nicer. Said yarn is marked down to $3. I pick up a ball. No, it's marked down again to $2. Now I really like this yarn. I've used it before, know how it works up, like the texture and the warmth it gives. So, I grab 10 balls, seeing this in my mind's eye.

I get to the register.

I pay a grand total of $14.

I come home and hide the yarn, seeing as I'd taken a pledge to use up my stash.

So, do you think they'll notice??

PS Last week I forgot to say that I ended up raising about $2000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. My hair is slowly coming back!

The before, with D, the wonder hairdresser. We had to change clippers because my hair was so thick!

The after. It feels like velvet to touch. I have noticed more flies trying to land in it. A friend thought they might be mistaking my hair for a sunflower. I'm not so sure.

I have had so many people say how brave and courageous I am to have my head shaved. I felt their comments were nice and I appreciated the support while not agreeing with the sentiment. Today I found out why.

This was my morning. I walked into my local coffee shop and the waitress said "Oh, your hair looks nice". I replied that it wouldn't for long because it was going to be shaved off for leukemia research fundraising. She then said "Oh, I used to shave mine...when I was having chemo".

That is brave.

After my coffee I went hunting for a bandana to keep the sun off. As I was paying for it, I happened to mention why I was making this purchase. The guy serving me said "That's a great cause, my Dad died from leukemia"

That is brave.

My hair was then shaved off. My dear friend, Miss D, took me out to lunch at one of our regular haunts. When she pointed out to S, the owner of the place, my hair and why I'd had it done, he said "That's fantastic! I battled cancer for five years."

That is brave.

While I was having my head shaved, I kept thinking about all of those people for whom it is not a choice...and losing their hair is the least of their problems.

I want to thank every person who has supported me both in spirit and financially. I have been moved by the generosity of the blogging and internet community....you guys are the best!

Proof of Knitting

So the big shave is on Thursday...at my boys' school! Don't know if they are very impressed by it all, but at least the teenager won't be there. He's got a swim carnival on. Just as well really.

I was thinking that my head might get cold as the months go by, and I've started knitting a fluffy white beret to get me through winter. My hair grows very quickly and I don't think this will be a problem for too long.

Speaking of hair, we were watching TV last night and an ad for 'Heads and Shoulders' shampoo came on. Mr Fitknit said he was waiting for the one called 'Knees and Toes' because he now has more hair there. My brother says that hair contains seeds and as it falls out, the seeds plant themselves in men's backs. Therefore, as they age, they lose the hair on the heads and get hairy backs. I wonder if this can be scientifically proven. Guess there will be a grant involved, somewhere.

Back to the knitting. This is the start of my vest. I notice the camera has decided the colour is bright purple. Those of us living in the real world can tell you it is much darker than this. Not that there is anything wrong with purple!

I can't believe how quickly the last few weeks have gone...nevermind!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all of the support and donations for my upcoming shave. I've raised nearly $1500.00 which isn't bad for just my short, spikey hair. The action will take place next week. Stay tuned!

Knitting has happened. It is still very humid here and not really conducive to knitting, but I have managed to cast on (naturally). I'm making a vest for myself with some yummy Debbie Bliss 8ply Merino, which I bought for a song on ebay. Last year! Yes, it is from the stash!

I found it surprising difficult to find a pattern I liked. So, instead, I'm using a jumper pattern and not making the sleeves...after all, what is a vest but a sleeveless jumper!

My butt is too close to the ground. Truly.

What got me started was a podcast called, interestingly enough. "Podcasts for runners'. Hmmm, must have been up all night thinking that one up! Despite the title, it is really good. You work up from the couch to eventually running 5k. The program increases intensity every week, or as often as you wish.

Anyway, enough of that.

Katt, yes that pattern is hideous. I don't really understand why they insist everyone sticks to that design but I guess that's their call. The yarn is Red Heart. Enough said about that.

Knitting has happened!

I've started my Christmas knitting. Hmmm, maybe I am organised after all! I'm making a scarf with the Lime and Violet yarn. I'm using the Knitty pattern Branching Out and it's coming along beautifully. It's not as 'Cat in the Hat' striped inperson. Amazing what the camera does to colour. Nevermind.

I didn't end up changing the colour of this yarn as I decided that my Mum and MIL would enjoy it...whether they want to or not!!!

I finished the Aids Baby Jumper which I believe is a Rotary project. Very simple pattern knit in one piece. I used the horrible acrylic for this one and it actually came up quite soft.

I've been working very hard at the 'Fit' part of my name. Spinning (on a bike) classes, pilates and weights are some of the things I being doing. I've also started running, something I haven't done for cough cough years (alright, it's a 2 digit number and the first digit isn't a 1). I really enjoy it, surprising me heaps!

I took DS1 to his double bass lesson this morning and had a little sing on the way down. He is now 12 and felt it was time to tell me my singing wasn't cool. Also, my air guitar wasn't cool. Finally, my air drumming was not cool.

However, my running is! Hooray!!

Camisa on the table,

Loved making this pattern. It is very easy, but with enough going on to maintain interest. Bendy Harmony (in Cindy Lime) behaved wonderfully and I think this is going to be a really pleasant fabric to wear...when the weather cools down a bit.

School is back into full swing again. I can't believe how 8 weeks can just fly. The boys are all very happy with their teachers so we are off to a good start. Orchestra rehearsals and cricket practice are also on again. Oh well, plenty more knitting time for me!

"From the 2nd of June 2007 until the 23rd we will be hosting our 8h Annual Beanie Exhibition, awarding a $50 Book voucher to the most outrageous creation. If there are any knitters who would like to be involved please contact Daniel at the shop ASAP. We had over 100 submissions last year and hope to expand it even further this year.

During July we will once again hold a Sculptural Knitting Exhibition titled Twisted Knits. It will run from the 7th until the 28th of July. We are looking for everything from knitted toys and objects to 3 D sculptural pieces, basically anything as long as the work isn’t functional in a traditional sense. The possibilities are endless. The first Sculptural Knitting Exhibition last year was fantastic, with everything from cakes and crocheted cacti to bowls of salad and coral reefs on display. We hope to continue it as an annual exhibition and would really love for it to expand. If there is anyone who is interested in submitting work or would like more information please let us know.

We will be out attending festivals and gatherings throughout the year. The ones that we have locked in so far are as follows:

We will be again venturing to the magnificent TAFTA Textile Fibre Forum at Orange in NSW from April 15rd – 21st, and also heading to the Geelong Textile Fibre Forum at Geelong Grammar in September (www.ggcreations.com.au/tafta.)

On June the 3rd we will be found at the annual Victorian Handknitters Guild Gathering at the Coburg Townhall (http://home.vicnet.net.au/~knitters). It is open from 10am – 3.30pm and entry is free.

During July we will be found at The Australian Wool & Sheep Show in Bendigo (www.sheepshow.com) and then at the Melbourne Design Festival’s Design Market in Fed Square (http://www.nationaldesigncentre.com.au.) We will let you know the exact dates as they come to hand"

1. I was born with red hair and black eyelashes and eyebrows. Apparently it is unusual and can cause your parents to be accused of dyeing your hair from an extremely young age. Now I'm of an age where if you didn't dye your hair you might be considered a tad weird.

2. I always cut one corner off toast before eating it. It remains only one corner even when there are multiple pieces of toast. I don't do this with bread or sandwiches. This one goes back to my Papa who always took 'tax' before giving us toast. (Maybe he is also responsible for those few years I spent working in the Taxation Office) I don't tend to do this when preparing food for others....but I might.

3. I laugh during funerals. Not intentionally, but that's just the sound that comes out. I'm working on this one.

4. After washing my hands, I always bang them twice on the side of the basin before drying. I also do this with my toothbrush. Twice. Every time. No more. No less.

5. I'm prepared to wait for my children while they do their activities. I thought this was normal behaviour for a parent, but I've been told I'm unusual. Maybe it's just in certain circles???

6. I'm heaps stronger than I look. I often get groceries or other large parcels carried for me but can bench press more than my body weight. I've been told that's unusual for a chick.

Inspired by Nat, I thought I'd post some pics of WIPs. The first shows the lovely Camisa. This is the front section, taken upside down, naturally.

The second shows an elegant (?) bedsock I'm doing for charity. I've used the 8ply acrylic, doubled. This was the yarn that had the softness and drape of plywood. However, doubled and garter stitch appear to have weakened its harshness.

I must apologise for the layout of this entry.I'm still having small discussions with Blogger and my computer. They are both quite happy with the way things are!

The boys only have one more week of holidays then off to school with them. As much as it was along break, the time has flown. Probably because they are old enough to amuse and, more importantly, FEED themselves. And can they eat!!!

I took them to see the Ben Stiller movie, Night at the Museum and can really recommend it. It has a good story with great actors. Worth a look or wait for the DVD!

Finding a Balance...

Turns out this entry is in two parts, mainly because every time I tried to write something, my photo disappeared. So, the pic below shows the back of the lovely Camisa, done in the nicely behaved lime Harmony from Bendy. I love how this is knitting up and I think it will be very comfortable to wear. I've started the mid section of the front so things are moving.

I'm currently working a finding a balance in my life. My blog name Fitknit describes the two areas under construction. I've hit the fitness bit really hard this year, having let things go a bit...OK a LOT.

It's amazing how quickly exercise becomes something I crave. I guess that is a good thing. I've put some upbeat music on the iPod to make it easier to get started. So far it's working.

I've also discovered the iPod is the quickest way to stop the boys from fighting. When they start, I just put the earbuds in, start singing or dancing around, and they stop almost immediately. Would probably worked not plugged in.
